Purpora Books is a full-time business specializing in literature first editions, signed copies, poetry broadsides, fine press and British Columbia history. Over 50% of our inventory is devoted to Canadian authors. We are committed to finding and providing our customers the nicest and most interesting copies available. Our bookroom is open by appointment - please phone ahead. We are always interested in buying books, from single collectible items to complete libraries.

We also have a selection of over 4000 additional books at Browns Books, a bookstore in north Burnaby near the Vancouver border (3740 Hastings Street).

Folio (40.0 cm x 24.1 cm), rebound (mid-19th century) in full calf, gilt border decorations on upper and lower boards, gilt inside dentelles, gilt lettering on spine ("New Testament") and a profusion of uniform gilt decorations on spine. Upper board present but cleanly detached; heavy wear to all tips. The leather has a beautiful rich patina. Overall the binding is in fair condition.

Wear to bottom tips of cloth covered boards, fraying and chipping at ends of spine, two dark spots (the larger being smaller than a dime and the other pencil eraser size) on the spine, and short horizontal tear middle of spine; hinges sound, previous owner bookplate affixed to first blank page and a short pencil line on two pages (one is red pencil), otherwise internally nice. This is the second state variant with publisher's device on title page. (Hammond & Anderson A3b2)

A play in three acts; 99 pages plus one B/W photo illustration from the original production. Signed by Davies on the title page.

Very faint book store stamp bottom of front free endpaper; dust jacket has tiny rubs at the bottom of the flap folds, a tiny puncture near the top of the front joint, otherwise an exemplary copy that is not price-clipped and does not have any of the usual fading of the spine panel. True first edition of Rushdie's second book, winner of the Booker Prize, and in 1993, to mark the 25th anniversary of the Booker Prize, was chosen by three former chairmen of judges to be the best of the previous winners, and named the Booker of Bookers.
